Navio da BYD chega ao Brasil novamente com Dolphin, Yuan e Song

BYD ignores high inventory and brings another 5,500 cars from China to Brazil while the factory only works on the project

BYD announced the arrival of another ship loaded with cars imported from China for the Brazilian market. This time, the BYD Explorer No.1 docked in Aracruz (ES), at Portocel. The vessel had already docked in Suape (PE) in April of last year, bringing around 5,000 units of electric and hybrid models, but mainly of the King hybrid sedan.

Now, there are 5,524 units of BYD cars imported from China, concentrated in the Dolphin and Yuan electric models, in addition to the Song hybrid. The brand did not differentiate the models, and did not clarify whether we are talking about Dolphin GS or Dolphin Plus, Song Pro, Song Plus or Song Premium; Yuan Plus or Pro.

The brand confirms that the strategy is to bring more imported units to Brazil as a way to circumvent the increase in taxes on imported electric and hybrid cars. Furthermore, the vehicles that are now arriving are already from the 2025/2026 model year. BYD also reported that it has plans to bring in more ships full of imported cars before the full rate comes into effect.

Before January 2024, imported vehicles, as long as they were hybrid or electric, did not pay import tariffs. Starting at the beginning of last year, the rate was 12% for hybrids (conventional HEV and plug-in PHEV) and 10% for battery electric vehicles. Since then, there has been another adjustment, with the rate for HEV hybrids rising to 25% in July 2024, going to 20% for PHEVs and 18% for electric vehicles.

The next increase in import taxes is scheduled for July 2025, when HEV vehicles will pay a 30% rate, PHEVs will go to 20% and electric vehicles will go to 25%. The latest increase is the 35% that Anfavea, the association that brings together national manufacturers, is requesting in advance. The higher rate will apply to all types of imported electrified vehicles from July 2026.

“The arrival of the BYD Explorer No. 1 in Brazil for the second time shows our commitment to meeting the growing demand for electrified vehicles in the country. While we prepare to start production in Camaçari, this operation ensures that more consumers have access to our models quickly. Investing in our own fleet of freighters is part of our strategy to make sustainable mobility more accessible and reinforce BYD's position as a leader in automotive electrification in the markets it operates,” says Alexandre Baldy, Senior Vice President of BYD Brazil and Head of Sales and Marketing at BYD Auto.

In 2024, BYD reached a historic milestone by registering 76,811 registrations in Brazil, representing 7 out of every 10 electric vehicles sold and 1 out of every 4 hybrids. This performance placed the brand among the ten automakers with the highest sales in the country.

On the global stage, BYD became the third most sold brand in the world with around 4.3 million units sold, an increase of 41% compared to 2023.
