Volkswagen to lead vehicle sales in Europe in 2024

In the 12 months of 2024, Volkswagen was the manufacturer that sold the most vehicles on the European market, with 1,371,465 units, 1% more than in 2023, in a market that grew 0.9%. Following the Germanic builder, curiously, a Japanese builder appears. We are referring to Toyota, whose presence in the European market has been growing steadily and last year it sold 928,767 units, 12% more than in 2023. The 3rd position in the ranking belonged to BMW which, by selling 774,925 units (6, 3% more than the previous year), also led the luxury brands segment.

The group of other carmakers in the European top 10 starts with Skoda in 4th place, and the Czech brand grew again surprisingly (12.7%), reaching 766,510 units. It was followed by the French company Renault with 699,214 new registrations, an increase of 2.7% compared to 2023. Mercedes and Audi appear respectively in 6th and 7th positions, the first with 684,027 units (+1.8%) and the second with 663,239 (- 9.6%), with the four-ringed brand being the only one to reduce its sales volume compared to 2023. Peugeot took 8th place with 641,264 units (+0.6%), ahead of Dacia (578,935, +3.9%), with Hyundai finishing the ranking in 10th place with 534,360 units — precisely the same number of vehicles it sold in 2023.

The top 20 of European sales was completed by Kia (529,157 and -7.5%) in 11th position, followed by Ford (426,307 and -17%), Opel (414,012 and -9.5%), all of which fell in sales, a cycle that is interrupted by Volvo (369,689), which recorded the highest increase in sales (+28.4%) among the top 20 in the ranking. Next are Citroën (358,828 and -2.8%), Tesla (327,034 and -10.8%), Nissan (307,276 and +4.5%), Fiat/Abarth (304,066 and -20.4%), Seat (271,980 and +10%) and Cupra (219,105 and +10.1%) which continues to increase sales volume and now appears in 20th position.

If we consider industrial consortia, Volkswagen AG (which includes Skoda, Audi, Seat and Cupra, among others) further strengthens its leadership, reporting 3,407,242 units sold, 2.5% more than in 2023. Stellantis remains in 2nd place with 1,969,594 vehicles, but registered a drop of 7.3% compared to the previous year, while the Renault Group continues to occupy 3rd place in the table with 1,282,453 units, which represents a growth of 3.2 %.

After this trio in the lead, two groups appear with similar results but different behaviors, respectively the Hyundai Group (1,063,517 units) and the Toyota Group (1,006,073 units), with the first selling 3.9% less than in 2023 and the second growing 13.1% in the same period. Rounding out the consortiums that sell more than half a million units in a full year are the BMW groups, with 923,202 units and +1%, and Mercedes, with 696,907 vehicles and -0.4%.
