Tesla Model Y: the best-selling electric car in the world for the second time in a row
Is the Toyota Corolla's global reign over? Apparently, yes. After being the world sales champion for 20 years in a row, the Japanese model was defeated by the Tesla Model Y for the second year in a row.
According to Focus2Move, considering data from 162 countries around the world, the Tesla Model Y is the two-time world sales champion with 1.09 million units (-1.2% compared to 2023). A very important fact is that for the second time an electric car is the best-selling car in the world.
But the competition with the Toyota Corolla was fierce in 2024. The Japanese model came in 2nd place with 1.08 million new registrations (-3.1%). The question for the automotive sector is whether the Corolla, without an electric version, will be able to regain its hegemony. In 3rd place was the Toyota RAV4 with 1.02 million sales (+10.7%), followed by the Ford F-Series in 4th with 903,454 sales (+1.5%).
In 5th place was the Honda CR-V with 738,743 sales (+4.2%), the Chevrolet Silverado obtained 639,889 registrations (+1.5%) and the Hyundai Tucson closed the year with 609,014 units sold (-2.8%).
In 8th place, the Toyota Camry reported 580,297 new registrations (-9.1%), just ahead of the BYD Song – which made a giant leap – and obtained 574,351 sales (+45.3%). The Volkswagen Tiguan closed the global top 10 ranking with 543,351 sales (+10.5%). Toyota maintains global leadership but sales fell 3.7% in 2024
Toyota remained the world's largest automaker after the release of a global balance sheet this week. Toyota has maintained the lead for the fifth consecutive year and is well ahead of Volkswagen despite the slight drop. In total, 10,821,480 vehicles were sold in all markets considering all brands. The number is 3.7% lower than 2023 but Toyota is still far from losing the lead.
Volkswagen, which sold 9.3 million, fell a little less, 2.3% also considering global data. BYD was third with 3.8 million units.
Global sales...If in Japan Toyota lost 19% of sales in 2024, in other countries the increase reached 0.5%. In Europe, 1.6 million units were sold, representing a jump of 3.6% and in North America the increase was 4.3% with 2.7 million units. In Asia as a whole, Toyota's decline reached 3.1%, mainly considering China, where the brand has a partnership with GAC. In the Chinese market, 1.7 million units were sold in 2024.
And hybrid cars are the ones that grew the most within Toyota's portfolio: 4,532,721 units sold are electrified, which represents 40% of the total. And Corolla and Corolla Cross alone accounted for 4.1 million units sold.
