AUTONEWS

Stellantis introduces STLA AutoDrive autonomous driving; technology allows hands-free and vision-free driving up to 60 km/h

Stellantis is launching its first Level 3 autonomous driving system in the Netherlands, developed in-house by the company and featuring Hands-Free and Eyes-Off functions.

This means that it is possible to be on board a Stellantis car with STLA AutoDrive 1.0, without having to control the steering wheel or pedals, as well as without having to keep your eyes on the road.

STLA AutoDrive is a fundamental pillar of Stellantis' strategy, together with STLA Brain and STLA SmartCockpit, promoting vehicle intelligence, automation and user experience combined.

It enables automated driving at speeds of up to 60 km/h, reducing the effort required by the driver in city traffic and giving back valuable time to the user, who can thus relax more during this stressful time of the day.

Ned Curic, Stellantis Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, said: “Helping drivers make the most of their time is a top priority. When dealing with routine driving tasks, STLA AutoDrive will enhance the driving experience, making time behind the wheel more efficient and enjoyable.” Activated only in specific traffic conditions, STLA AutoDrive notifies the driver that it is cleared by simply initiating it via a physical button. The system then takes control, maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed, and managing steering and braking seamlessly based on traffic flow.

Auto Drive also features individualized adaptive cruise control and lane centering functions in Level 2 (hands-on) and Level 2+ (hands-off, eyes-on) modes. It operates at night or in challenging weather conditions, such as light rain or water spray on the road, and also has a self-cleaning sensor system for added safety. STLA Auto Drive is cloud-connected and allows for continuous remote updates and real-time data integration, ensuring optimal performance at all times.

In countries with stricter regulations, it requires drivers to remain seated, with their seatbelts fastened and ready to take control when requested.

In the future, STLA Auto Drive will operate at speeds of up to 95 km/h and with more automated features. Will it happen? Probably.
