Toyota Kayoibako: The Next-Generation Electric Van That’s Affordable for the Future

Inspired by Japan’s kayoibako shipping containers, Toyota’s new microvan is reimagining affordable transportation for the future. The Toyota Kayoibako concept model is celebrating its first anniversary since it debuted at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo last year.

The next-generation electric van is built on an ultra-versatile platform that can also be used to transport commercial goods, as well as as a minibus and, eventually, as a mobile pop-up store.

The adventure camper-style model is equipped with a roof rack for securing gear and cargo, a rear ladder and a side rack for carrying water and fuel containers.

In partnership with Japanese home and lifestyle company D&Department, Toyota created a floor plan that’s two meters long. This allows for a double bed to be opened up in a space that uses vintage lanterns to make the vehicle more comfortable.

The design includes a two-part rear door with a folding section, making it easy to get out of bed and go for a morning walk. There are currently no additional camping equipment, such as a kitchen or bathroom.

Other features... The Japanese automaker also presented other options for using the Toyota Kayoibako, such as a mobile pop-up store. The clothes racks and shelves have been placed directly on the sliding door.

There is also an adaptable version that accommodates a wheelchair in the driver or front passenger position and, of course, a basic goods carrier.

According to the company, the on-board software package allows for upgrades for different purposes. The van can be integrated, for example, with an inventory control system. The software runs on a display installed between the windshield and the dashboard, with an auxiliary screen next to the steering wheel.
