Tesla Model Y

Tesla Model Y, the darling of Europe

JATO Dynamics has released data on European sales of electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models in July, the former drawing all their energy from batteries and the latter combining combustion engines with electric units to reduce consumption and emissions. EV sales fell by 6% in the month, while PHEVs fell even more (-10%).

In the 7th month of the year, in which the overall European market grew by 2%, drivers did not show much interest in purchasing models equipped with electrified mechanics, whether 100% electric or PHEV. The reasons for the drop in demand are related to the end of incentives for electric cars in the largest European market, Germany, and it is not so easy to explain the even greater reduction in sales of PHEVs, since the Germans maintain subsidies for this type of vehicle, as long as they guarantee greater autonomy (80 km) in electric mode.

Among 100% electric vehicles, the sales leader continues to be the Tesla Model Y, which sold 9,544 units, 16% less than in the same period in 2023. The North American SUV left behind the new Volvo EX30, with 6,573 units, the VW ID.4 (5,295 units/-40%) and the Tesla Model 3 (4,694 units/-17%), with the Skoda Enyaq closing the top 5 with 4,346 vehicles sold (-27%). The table of the 10 best-selling EVs in Europe was completed by the BMW iX1 (4,305 units/+25%), BMW i4 (4,198 units/+23%) and Audi Q4 (3,979 units/+27%), with the MG4 (3,966 units/-33%) and the Cupra Born (3,863 units/+4%) closing this ranking. In total, 139,244 electric vehicles were sold in July, which represented a reduction of 6% compared to the same period in the previous year.

PHEV sales fell more sharply (-10%) compared to July 2023, totaling 74,237 units, around half of the EV sales volume. The Volvo XC60 took the lead (4,363 units/+26%), ahead of the Ford Kuga (4,217 units/-16%), BMW X1 (3,243 units/+50%), Cupra Formentor (2,773 units/+20%) and Mercedes GLC (2,504 units/+7%). The remaining places in the top 10 are occupied by the BMW X5 (2015 units/+21%), Kia Niro (1906 units/+187%), Volvo XC90 (1859 units/+33%), Toyota C-HR (1780 units) and the BMW 3 Series (1751 units/-16%).
