TESLA
Billionaire Elon Musk is known, among other things, for his eccentricity. Yes, he is controversial, powerful, successful, operates in different areas of technology, etc., etc., etc. But he is much more eccentric than anything else. Proof of this is the name of one of the businessman's sons: “X Æ A-12”.
Yes, I can't read or say that out loud either. But that's the official name.
Musk also has a touch of megalomania. And Tesla's factories reflect this. Or rather, mega factories. Tesla adopts this “Gigafactory” model in several different countries. It has one in Nevada, in the United States; another in Shanghai, in China; and also in Berlin-Brandenburg, in Germany.
The latter recently opened its doors to a foreign journalist, who visited the production line, almost entirely made by robots.
And that’s where megalomania and eccentricity meet. One of the highlights of the plant is a gigantic robot that has been given the name… Godzilla.
What Godzilla does: Unlike the Japanese kaiju, this Tesla Godzilla is yellow, not green.
The nickname has to do with the size of the machine.
Last year, Tesla released a series of videos on X (formerly Twitter) detailing how a Model Y is manufactured in Germany.
A large part of the process involves welding and bolting together the body panels and chassis castings made in the famous giant press.
Six hundred robots are responsible for assembling them.
When this is done, the skeleton of the car is suspended in the air by Godzilla, as shown in the following video:
The car even looks small in Godzilla’s grip.
The yellow robotic arm is about the height of a three-story building.
Above, the Model Y undergoes painting.
Oh, and if Godzilla wasn't enough, the Berlin factory has another mega robot on the production line and he's been named... King Kong.
Tesla and robots... This mega factory in Germany was inaugurated in 2022 and cost 5 billion euros. It's the largest investment in the history of the European country.
So much money has given way to a space that's the size of approximately 31 football fields. The vehicle painting area alone takes up a 300-meter corridor.
In addition to the electric cars themselves, the Gigafactory produces cells, batteries and transmission components that go into the world's best-selling EV, the Model Y. The site's estimated capacity is 375,000 units annually.
And now we know about the existence of Godzilla and King Kong. We also know that these won't be the only movie stars inside.
