Ford Capri: the model's return as an electric coupé SUV
The Capri was one of Ford's most emblematic models, a long, two-door coupé that the brand launched in 1969 and manufactured for three generations over 17 years. The four-seater model left an important mark on sports enthusiasts, certainly not due to the version powered by the small 1.3 engine with four cylinders, but rather due to the Capri 3.0 GT and Capri RS2600, both with a V6 engine that proved their value in the races of era. Now, Ford announces the return of the model, no longer as a sports coupé with two doors and four seats, but as an electric SUV coupé which, as it is less bulky and more dynamic, is more aerodynamic and could be considered a crossover.
The Capri is another Ford vehicle that results from this manufacturer's sharing of platforms with Volkswagen, to which the North Americans gave the base of their Ranger pick-up for the production of the new Amarok. In exchange, the German manufacturer provided the MEB electric platform so that its occasional “partners” could move forward with the Explorer and Capri, which in the market will be seen as competitors to the VW ID.4 and ID.5.
Compared to the Explorer (4,468 m), the Capri (4,634 m) is 16.6 cm longer and 4 mm shorter, using the same wheelbase (2,767 m), which allows it to offer more luggage (567 versus 470 liters). And like the Explorer, Ford's new SUV is offered with rear-wheel drive (RWD) and 286 hp or all-wheel drive (AWD) and two engines that add up to 340 hp.
If the RWD are equipped with a 77 kWh battery, the AWD versions of both SUVs use the new 79 kWh accumulator, which increases the range a little more, almost compensating for the approximately 65 additional kg they weigh on. the balance due to the second engine and the more generous accumulator. If we consider the more affordable versions (RWD), the Ford Capri announces a range of 627 km, compared to 602 km for the equivalent Explorer, which combined with the greater length will tend to make us forget a slightly higher price, which in Portugal is €51,608, in other words, €2,541 more than the Explorer's €49,067.
