Brand launches new products from its high-performance brand Mercedes-AMG in the Brazil
Starting this June, Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans do Brasil launches new products from its high-performance brand Mercedes-AMG in the country that are even more innovative and exclusive. Equipped with all-new high-performance hybrid technology, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE and Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE take the brand's signature superior performance DNA into electrification.
The 'AMG E PERFORMANCE' concept is the first high-performance hybrid from Mercedes-AMG, combining combustion engines, handcrafted several decades ago, with an electric motor and a high-performance battery, developed by AMG itself, installed on the axle. rear. The high-performance battery is based on direct-cooled battery cells (same as F1 cars). Just like in Formula 1, the battery is specifically designed for rapid energy delivery and recharge.
AMG E PERFORMANCE hybrid powertrain: front combustion engine and rear electric motor...The well-known 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine is combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM), a high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach and the drive system fully variable integral AMG Performance 4MATIC. The system's maximum power and torque provide acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds. Power delivery only ends at an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
The electric motor is positioned at the rear axle, where it is integrated with an electrically driven two-speed transmission and electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential to form an Electric Drive Unit (EDU). Experts refer to this layout as a P3 hybrid. The high-performance battery is located above the rear axle. The decisive advantage of this position is directly related to the nine-speed transmission, which is connected to the V8 engine. As the EDU is positioned behind the transmission, the torque of both can be fully utilized, resulting in more than 1400 Nm of torque.
Furthermore, there are other arguments in favor of the P3 setup as a high-performance hybrid:
- The P3 concept makes electrical thrust with full torque possible throughout the entire speed range.
- The electric motor acts directly on the rear axle and can therefore convert its power directly into propulsion.
- The design of the electric motor means that its power can immediately come in at full torque, making particularly agile starting possible.
- Furthermore, the driver immediately experiences a noticeable increase in performance thanks to the integrated, electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential.
- In situations of loss of rear traction, drive power from the combustion engine and electric motor is transferred to the front wheels as needed. This is made possible by the mechanical connection of the fully variable all-wheel drive via the drive shaft and front wheel drive axles. It also makes it possible to drive in pure electric mode with all-wheel drive.
- Positioning on the rear axle improves weight and axle load distribution in the vehicle. This forms the basis for engaging driving.
- The AMG concept offers very high recovery efficiency, as the system allows only minimal mechanical and hydraulic losses of the engine and transmission. In ‘Comfort’ driving mode, the combustion engine can be switched off. This reduces drag torque when the driving situation allows.
- The two-speed transmission on the rear axle changes automatically, without driver intervention. With its specially tuned gear ratio, it guarantees a combination of high torque at the wheels for agile starting and smooth, continuous performance at higher speeds. An electric actuator engages second gear at a maximum speed of around 140 km/h, which corresponds to the electric motor's maximum speed of around 13,500 rpm.
- With the increased performance due to the additional electric motor, the development team improved the efficiency of the entire vehicle in parallel and achieved lower emissions as well as lower consumption.
