Best sellers in Europe in March: Tesla Model Y surpasses Golf and Sandero

Data released by consultancy JATO Dynamics has just revealed European commercial numbers for the month of March. With approximately 1,377,541 vehicles sold in the period (a total of 28 countries), the market fell by around 2.7% compared to the same month last year and felt the impacts of the slowdown in demand for electric cars.

Although slight, the drop is directly related to the high prices charged for EVs. "The very high prices of electric cars block the transition from gasoline and diesel models to battery-powered vehicles. There is also uncertainty about state incentives in many European countries and fears about battery life," comments Felipe Munoz, analyst of JATO Dynamics.

Among the best-selling models of the month, the electric Tesla Model Y stands out. Despite falling 42% compared to March 2023, the crossover sold 26,847 units and overtook traditional European market champions. The Volkswagen Golf, for example, came in second place with 25,779 registered units (+43%) while the Dacia Sandero totaled 25,660 registrations (+23%) and came in third place.

The ranking also reveals important growth in other models, such as Renault Clio (+28%), Ford Puma (+26%), Toyota Yaris (+39%) and Nissan Juke (+30%).
