RALLY DAKAR 2024
Adrien Van Beveren wins, Ricky Brabec new leader and Joan Barreda abandons the Dakar 2024
The Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren has won stage 6 of the Dakar 2024, the long-awaited 'Chrono 48 hours' that began yesterday with the Hondas taking center stage and which has ended in the same vein, since the American Ricky Brabec has completed his assault to the leadership. The bad news has come with the abandonment of the Spanish Joan Barreda due to mechanical problems. He has also left Mason Klein due to battery problems on his Kove.
For the twelve drivers who managed to reach camp F yesterday (the sixth of the seven planned on the route), today's day was reduced to just over 100 kilometers of special. Of all of them, eleven would cover them without major setbacks and would reach the finish line early to anticipate tomorrow's rest day.
However, Joan Barreda's day today barely lasted 16 kilometers: the time it took for his Hero to stop at kilometer point 529 of the special section, forcing the Castellón native to what was his first Dakar with the Indian brand and, possibly, the last of his career in the test, marked by partial joys and final sadness.
The other eleven maintained more or less the same line as yesterday, with Adrien Van Beveren totally unleashed: if yesterday he went to bed with an income of just over a minute, in the following camp he had practically doubled it, being the fastest in the three sectors that remained to be covered to achieve an overwhelming victory.
7 hours, 57 minutes and 29 seconds were spent on the 625 kilometers of special in a stage starting and finishing in Shubaytah, the only one that took less than eight hours. More than four minutes away was finally Toby Price, who overtook Ricky Brabec who took the lead... but with less than a minute ahead of Ross Branch, fifth at 9:40. Between them stood Daniel Sanders.
Luciano Benavides and Nacho Cornejo, who were left alone opening the track with the loss of Joan Barreda, finished sixth and seventh, respectively. More than 16 minutes left Kevin Benavides, who day by day sees the dream of retaining victory receding, with Stefan Svitko ninth.
The Frenchman Jeanloup Lepan closed the top 10, rising to the lead of Rally2 after the problems of his compatriot Romain Dumontier, who yesterday ran out of gas two minutes before refueling and lost about 50 minutes. Something that also happened yesterday to Pablo Quintanilla, finally 31st in the stage, falling to 17th overall after more than two hours.
