Porsche Taycan runs out of headlights on public roads
In addition to vehicle theft, in which thieves leave the scene behind the wheel of someone else's car, we are already accustomed to cases in which thieves leave the car on top of some bricks to steal the wheels and tires. But this case raises the bar even higher, as the other person's friends chopped up the sheet metal of an electric Porsche just to “relieve” it from the headlights.
The case took place in Düsseldorf, Germany, where a Taycan Cross Turismo was parked peacefully on a public street when it aroused the interest of some thieves. Apparently, the thieves were only interested in the vehicle's headlights, which they needed to remove without compromising their appearance or proper functioning. As for the damage inflicted on the Porsche, which in Portugal can cost between 100,000 and 200,000 euros, the photos demonstrate that there were no limits to achieving the objective.
According to the brand, the entire body of the Taycan Cross Turismo, with the exception of the bumpers, is made of aluminum panels that the thieves cut like butter, probably with an ordinary sheet metal cutter. Having removed the tops of the mudguards, the criminals had access to the headlights, which they dismantled and switched off with the utmost care, as there would be a customer waiting with the check written.
The owner was left behind with a wrecked vehicle, in need of two new front fenders and a pair of headlights, which in Germany sell for around €4,000 per unit. Do you think it's expensive? So it's good to know that only the four wheels installed on the model, the 21" Design ones, are sold in our country for €4,378.80 per piece, so if the thieves left the car on bricks and took the wheels and tires, they would have taken with them €16,000 worth of rims and €1600 worth of tires. Perhaps a quick tour of the German police around the German “stairwell” workshops will allow us to find a Cross Turismo crashed head-on and in urgent need of two headlights…
The case became public after a publication on Reddit, and it should be remembered that in 2012 there were a series of cases related to the theft of headlights, at the time of xenon. The customers for these lights were marijuana growers from Amsterdam who, to grow their plants in the basement or garage, away from the curiosity of neighbors and authorities, needed powerful light to make them grow.
