SQUAD MOBILITY
The electric microcar market is still limited in the United States when compared to Europe and Asia, for example, but a Dutch startup wants to change that.
Squad Mobility has launched a special edition of its small solar-powered EV especially for the American market: the Solar Buggy.
Announced this week, the adventurous version based on the Solar City Car was touted as “a compact and affordable solar car that charges with solar energy” via an integrated panel.
The company's focus is to use solar energy as a boost to the vehicle's range.
The roof-mounted solar panel added more than 30 km of extra range in sunny day testing in Las Vegas.
Also present are four swappable, portable batteries that together offer an all-electric range of 100 km.
In Europe, the model is sold with a more sober look and in two versions: a two-seater that reaches 45 km/h and a more powerful one with a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
It is not yet clear whether the vehicle has already gone through the entire approval process to legally travel on American streets. There, the EV will fall into the low-speed vehicle category (or LSV). This means it must have a speed limited to 40 km/h.
Availability and price...According to the company, the vehicle will be available in the USA in 2025 starting at US$6,250, around R$30,000 at the current price without taxes. Pre-sales are now open with no booking fee.
We are seeing tremendous interest from the United States, specifically in markets such as golf cart communities, (corporate) campuses, hotels and resorts, amusement parks and city services...Robert Hoevers, CEO of Squad Mobility in a statement
