“active bonnet”: the Model 3’s device that protects pedestrians and cyclists in the event of being run over
Tesla is many points behind the competition when it comes to communication. Interestingly, even when this damages the brand's image among customers. One of the most recent examples was made public by one of the owners of the renewed Model 3, who discovered in the instruction manual that the Tesla saloon now features an “active hood”, a device that protects pedestrians and cyclists in the event of being run over.
The system raises the front bonnet as soon as the sensors detect the collision, distancing the lid that covers the trunk so that it can deform more with the impact of the trunk and head, absorbing more energy in the process and protecting the person who was run over. The rear part of the bonnet, the one closest to the windscreen, is raised 8 cm whenever the car detects a frontal impact when the vehicle is traveling between 30 and 52 km/h, thus covering the speeds used within urban centers.
This solution is already available on several models in different markets, and is a necessity in Europe, as it integrates devices that can improve the score attributed by EuroNCAP to the protection that vehicles provide to their users and pedestrians. The Model 3, which this organization already gave one of the best scores in the segment, should improve its evaluation even further.
Tesla, which already installed the “active hood” on the Model S and Model It should be noted that the North American manufacturer did not disclose the addition of this security-related technology, information that was only known thanks to an owner's publication on the X social network.
In addition to the “active hood”, this curious owner's consultation of the model's instruction manual also revealed that the renewed Model 3 now uses metal hooks on the doors, keeping them in place even during a more violent impact, with the lid of the luggage compartment now installing two shock absorbers. All solutions that will please many customers, but that only the most curious will be aware of.
