AUTONEWS

The most dangerous cars. Models with the most deaths

When it comes to buying a family car, the safety offered by that model plays an important role. Customers are looking for safe cars that keep the occupants safe on board.

Modern cars offer more active or passive safety systems than ever before, and the risks of serious injury or even death decrease. However, there are models in which the average number of deaths is higher, and those who at Car Help Corner have created a list of the 10 most insecure models you can buy. The top is based on data recorded in the United States of America and provided by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The data was recorded between the years 2018 and 2021.

What are the most dangerous cars you can buy?...A true symbol of motoring, the Ford Mustang is a car much loved by car enthusiasts everywhere. However, the study conducted by the IIHS reveals that the Mustang has a rate of 97 deaths per 1 million registered cars. We must not forget that it is a car that comes equipped with powerful engines and, in the wrong hands, it can get out of control, which can lead to serious accidents.

The Dodge Charger is another iconic American car, but one with a high fatality average. Apparently the Charger has a rate of 118 deaths for every 1 million cars registered.

In 8th place comes the Charger’s brother, the Dodge Challenger, a model well known for its V8 engines with consistent power. The Dodge Challenger had a fatality rate of 154 for every 1 million registered cars. The two models will be discontinued, so they will only be available for purchase on the second-hand car market.

The next car on this list is the Chevrolet Camaro, another muscle car that will be phased out after 2023. According to the study, the Camaro has a rate of 223 deaths per 1 million vehicles registered. All these cars are offered with powerful engines and are very attractive to the young audience. These very high numbers of fatal accidents can also result from this.

The compacts didn’t do very well either...In the compact category, the study showed that the Hyundai Elantra has a fatality rate of 103 for every 1 million registered cars. Compared to the other cars listed so far, that’s a relatively small number.

Right after the Hyundai Elantra comes the Korean compatriot Kia Forte. This model has a recorded rate of 111 deaths for every 1 million cars. The Hyundai Elantra and Kia Forte were the only models in the compact class included in the IIHS study. However, subcompact cars have had even worse results. The second Kia model on this list is the Rio, a car equivalent to the Renault Clio or Volkswagen Polo. According to the study, the IIHS recorded 122 deaths per 1 million registered cars.

On the 3rd place we find Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai Accent, with a rate of 152 and 151 deaths per 1 million cars, respectively. No. 1 doubles those numbers, as the Mitsubishi Mirage had 388 deaths per 1 million registered cars, making it the most unsafe car in this study.

What are the safest cars included in the study?...At the opposite pole, the study showed that models such as the Toyota C-HR, Porsche Macan, Lexus NX and Lexus RX look very good in the statistics, with only 5 or 6 deaths recorded for every 1 million cars. The same applies to models such as the Volvo XC60 or XC90, the Audi Q5 or the BMW X3. Furthermore, no fatal accidents were reported in the BMW X3. Among the sedans, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Lexus ES stand out.
