S-Way 480 6x2 in details
Of the six brands of heavy trucks present in the country, Iveco just needed to offer a top-of-the-line truck. That is, with comfort and Premium finishing, in addition to on-board intelligence and security systems. And now with the Iveco S-Way, the manufacturer offers a truck with the strength to have a strong presence in the market.
By the way, in this sense, it is worth remembering that Volvo, DAF, Scania, Mercedes-Benz are present with their trucks in the list of the 10 best sellers in the market. Volkswagen has also been there. And now Iveco needs to make its debut. After all, being in the ranking of the best-selling trucks in Brazil is a good thermometer to measure its acceptance.
In this way, technically, Iveco has a suitable product. Starting with the power train that adjusts to the demands of the road transport operation.
Cursor works with Traxon...The engine is the Cursor 13 produced by FPT. A 13-liter in-line six-cylinder that features the Common Rail injection system updated to meet Proconve P8 (Euro 6) emission limits. In this regard, the engine uses SCR technology in combination with the DPF filter and the DOC oxidizer system. The combination of this technology is called Hi eSCR.
Thus, the engine of the version evaluated by Estradão develops power of 480 hp, between 1,400 and 1,900 rpm. Torque is 250 mkgf, which, in the green range, is available from 1,000 rpm and reaches 1,400 rpm.
However, in practice, already at 900 rpm power is available. It is worth remembering that, in this experience, we drove with the truck loaded with 22t of liquid cargo. But this is a 6x2 truck. Therefore, capable of towing 58 t of total gross weight (PBTC) on the 4th axle semi-trailer.
The Cursor 13 works in conjunction with the ZF Traxon box. In addition to being automated with 12 gears and two reverse gears, it has a series of features that eliminate, for example, the tension of the driver constantly trying to balance speed and rotation to save diesel.
Driving intelligence...Among the features worth mentioning are the Eco and Power driving modes. In the first, the truck saves diesel. For this reason, at cruising speed, the torque does not leave the green range. The Power mode, on the other hand, gives the vehicle strength, especially when overtaking or when overcoming a steeper section with the truck loaded. However, when identifying that the vehicle no longer needs the extra power, the truck itself "understands" and disables the feature.
Another intelligence of the Traxon box is the Predictive Cruise Control (PCC). It "recognises" the road situation with 2.5 km ahead. In this way, it makes the most appropriate decision-making in relation to power and torque, with the aim of saving diesel. This is possible because Traxon has all routes in Brazil mapped.

We evaluated the truck in the version with a high-roof cab and Tech package. That is, equipped with 7" multimedia and on-site key, with the engine starting via a button. The vehicle's well-curved panel leaves the driver involved as in a cockpit. And with everything at hand. A differential is the gear change in the This is because Traxon dispenses with the conventional gearbox, so the driver activates the steering mode using the D (drive), N (neutral) and R (reverse) keys.
Riding on the S-Way...Thanks to the S-Way level of intelligence, instructor Júlio César Sabará started the trip by choosing to use the box in automatic mode for 100% of the operation. That way, "it's possible to focus more on the traffic," he says.
In addition, the more truck resources the driver enjoys, the greater the chances of making a good Eco Drive score. This is a tool that, like an instructor, grades the driver according to his performance behind the wheel. That is, the system evaluates the amount of braking and acceleration. And, the more the driver uses the brake pedal, instead of the engine brake, or even makes unnecessary accelerations, the system lowers the score.
Thus, an assessment is given at each end of the trip and can be monitored on the on-board computer panel. Anyway, on our route, we depart from the Mercalf concessionaire, in Jundiaí, bound for Itu, in the interior of São Paulo. That is, a 100 km route with many ups and downs along the Marechal Rondon and Engenheiro Herculano highways.
In terms of comfort, the air suspension of the driver's seat can be adjusted according to weight and height. And it also brings more stability when going over uneven floors. The vehicle lacks air suspension. But, according to Iveco, the brand should introduce 6x2 and 4x2 trucks as early as 2024. The rest station has a large bed. And with a refrigerator at the bottom of the series.

Riding on the S-Way...Thanks to the S-Way level of intelligence, instructor Júlio César Sabará started the trip by choosing to use the box in automatic mode for 100% of the operation. That way, "it's possible to focus more on the traffic," he says.

By the way, the chosen route was precisely to show the features of the Iveco S-Way. For example, as the road limit for heavy vehicles is 80 km/h, Sabará chose to program the autopilot to run at 75 km/h. However, every time the pilot saw the arrival of a descent section, he already put the engine brake into action.
With this adjustment, the driver only stepped on the service brake at the two toll plazas on the route. In addition, of course, when stopping the truck completely at the dealership.
The strength of braking power... In that sense, the S-Way's engine braking is one of the strongest in its class. With a braking power of 610 hp distributed in four stages. In the first, it is already capable of braking 13% of its capacity. In the second stage, it reduces the truck's speed by 50%, and in the third stage by 80%. Therefore, in the fourth and last it is possible to almost stop the truck.
However, from experience and to ensure safety in traffic, when the driver saw a more intense descent, he left it to the autopilot, programmed at 60 km/h. As well as the engine brake. By the way, because of him, in 11th gear, the rotation is at 2000 rpm.
Regarding the cruising speed on the flat section of the highway, Sabará disabled the engine brake and the autopilot. In this way, the rotation drops to 1,100 in the same gear. However, at a cruising speed of 80 km/h. Thus, when using the resources of the Iveco S-Way, Sabará had a 99% success rate behind the wheel. Regarding the average, in the 101 km traveled, the truck consumed 37 liters of diesel, with an average of 2.7 km/l.

Verdict... The evaluated Iveco S-Way costs, according to Fipe, R$ 882,024 (Brazilian currency) in this configuration of power and traction. But the vehicle still has the option of the security package. Thus, it is now equipped with LDWS emergency braking and involuntary lane departure warning. In addition to the ACC, automatic speed regulation system.
About the price in this version, Iveco does not inform. However, in ''Estradão Mgazine'' evaluation, it is clear that in terms of embedded technologies, the S-Way does not leave anything to be desired. A truck that arrives at the great moment that Iveco is living in the country. And that has everything to help the brand to conquer even more market share.
