They build a wonderful racing car from 30-year-old Porsches
When introduced in 1977, the turbocharged Porsche Type 934/5 dominated the SCCA Trans American long-distance racing series; won six of the eight races of the season and became champion. This triumphant racing car comes to life in the dynamic and weight-reducing study car (DLS), which differs from its predecessors not only with its turbo engine, but also with its sound.
The body is built from carbon fiber panels: this makes the car lighter, but also stiffer. The aerodynamic characteristics are optimized by computer modeling, and the content of the package is determined by whether the customer wants to use his car primarily on the public road or on a race track. The butter-colored one shown in our pictures is an example of the former, while the orange coupe is an example of the latter. It is also possible for the customer to receive both aero packages: in this case, the two systems can be exchanged with quick connectors.
The 3.8-liter boxer six-cylinder turbo engine with four valves per cylinder is equipped with electric bypass valves, an intermediate charge air cooler and a horizontally integrated electric cooling fan. Engine power is a matter of tuning, but the peak is somewhere above 700 horsepower; the maximum speed of the engine exceeds 9000/min.
The power transmission is a six-speed manual, and the car is of course rear-wheel drive. As for the chassis, track-tuned suspension can be requested, as well as an adaptive shock absorber that can be controlled by the driver from the dashboard.
The brakes are carbon fiber, the front 19-inch, and the rear 20-inch centrally mounted wheels are forged from magnesium.
