Carlos Ghosn sues Nissan, seeks $1 billion in damages

French-Lebanon-Brazilian Carlos Ghosn, former CEO of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, has filed an appeal in the Lebanese courts against Nissan. He claims US$ 1 billion in compensation from the Japanese group, a judicial source indicated this Tuesday (20) to international news agencies.

According to the judicial source, Ghosn filed an appeal in May with Lebanon's Court of Cassation against Nissan and 12 employees for defamation, slander and falsification of material evidence. The businessman believes that "accusations were invented against him in Japan, which led to his arrest and the prosecution of him".

Ghosn is seeking "$1 billion in compensation," the source said. The hearing date was reportedly set for September 18.

Questioned by AFP, the Nissan company did not comment on the matter, stating that it discovered the lawsuit through the press and is verifying the information internally. Ghosn's lawyer in Lebanon did not respond to requests for an interview.

The former CEO of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is the subject of an Interpol red alert at the request of Japan. In April 2022, France issued another arrest warrant, as part of an investigation for abuse of corporate assets, breach of trust, money laundering and passive corruption.

The businessman has always claimed to be innocent and claims that he fled Japan, where he was under house arrest, to "escape from injustice", which he classifies as "biased". He denounces a plot against him, which would have been devised by Nissan with the support of the Japanese government to remove him from the leadership of the group and avoid a union with Renault.

Due to Interpol's red alert, Lebanese justice prohibits Ghosn from leaving the country. Lebanon does not extradite its citizens.
