The term “station wagon” has been relegated to the dustbin of history as market share for crossovers and SUVs continues to expand.
As minivans and utility vehicles began to replace station wagons as the main family vehicle in the 1980s, station wagons entered an irreversible decline and automakers, as well as some European manufacturers, lost interest in developing new designs.
Overview...One of the exceptions was Volvo of Sweden, who have continued to build and refine the station wagon to the present day, so the Volvo V60 is one of the last station wagons available to a dwindling group of die-hard fans.
The V60 comes with a full range of seamlessly integrated driver assistance features, extensive connectivity, comfortable seats, plus all-wheel drive and a small but powerful engine that give the car impressive driving characteristics.
To accentuate the V60's visual appeal, Volvo's stylists emphasize the long bonnet with ridges in the sheet metal, a relaxed windshield and a sloping roof, which merges with the tailgate to complete the exterior design. The front fascia bears the familiar Volvo trustmark insignia and carefully designed light fixtures, and the look is amplified on the V60 Cross Country by the roof rails and bold 20-inch wheels.
Interior...Inside, the V60 has the familiar look that Volvo has used in its vehicle cabins for the last several years. There's the perfectly stitched instrument cluster, a 9-inch touchscreen in the center stack framed by piano black trim, glossy work and light wood inlays.
There are also comfortable ventilated Nappa leather seats and four-zone climate controls for driver and passenger. The vehicle's interior is very quiet, helping to enhance the music from the Bower and Wilkins speaker entertainment systems. Advanced safety and connectivity technology is also well integrated into the cabin.
Powertrain...The Volvo V60 Cross Country B5 AWD is built with a 2.0 liter turbocompressor engine and direct injection, coupled to an 8-speed automatic transmission with start-stop. It also comes with AWD with instant drive.
The V60 is also equipped with a mild-hybrid system capable of being recharged by the regenerative braking system. The US Environmental Protection Agency gave the 2023 V60 a combined fuel economy rating of 26 mpg, including 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
Safety and Technology...Volvo has a well-kept reputation for building safe vehicles and the V60 Cross Country comes with a full range of safety features including multiple airbags, low and high speed collision mitigation, braking mitigation. It also has a blind spot detection system with steering assistance, cyclist and pedestrian detection and rear cross traffic alert.
It also features rear backup camera with surround view feature, LED headlights and fog lights, as well as adaptive cruise control. The V60 comes with built-in Google Maps, Bluetooth, satellite radio and over-the-air update capability, as well as a head-up display.
The electric power steering is crisp and responsive, and the brakes have plenty of stopping power. The 247 horsepower is more than enough, as the V60 seems to drive like a car with an engine bigger and heavier than the four cylinders hidden in the engine compartment.
