FORD
E-Transit Courier
Having just recently introduced the electric Explorer EV, Ford today presented another electric novelty, namely E-Transit Courier.
This is another electric vehicle aimed at European customers, although here the target audience is different. The Courier is Ford’s smallest Transit van, sitting below the Transit Connect in the range, and this all-new E-Transit Courier is the first to offer all-electric drive.
Unlike the European Explorer EV, which borrows its platform and powertrain from Volkswagen’s ID.4, the E-Transit Courier is based on Ford’s own EV architecture, the same architecture Ford will use for the future electric Puma, with both vehicles made in a factory in Craiova, Romania.
How was it, Ford E-Transit Courier occupies a serious attitude and represents a significant departure from the brand’s earlier design. The overall length has increased by 118 mm to 4278 mm and, more importantly, the area of the cargo area has increased. The length at floor level now measures 1803 mm instead of 1621 mm.
The total volume is 2.9 cubic meters, which is an increase of 25 percent compared to the outgoing model, while the maximum load capacity is 700 kilograms.
For now, Ford has announced that the E-Transit Courier has a single 100 kW/136 HP electric motor that drives the front wheels, while the top speed is limited to 145 km/h.
The built-in 11 kW charger will charge the battery in 5.7 hours, but on the fast charger it takes about 35 minutes to charge from 10-80 percent.
The E-Transit’s powertrain can be configured for single-pedal driving, and users can also schedule battery charging via the smart 12.0-inch Sync 4 infotainment touchscreen, which Ford has reserved for electric versions of the new Courier.
The Transit Courier will also be available with both gasoline and diesel engines (the red version), and those models will arrive first, in the fall of 2023, about a year before the EV.
Ford says electric vans currently only account for 6 percent of the commercial market, but expects that to grow to 75 percent by the end of the decade.
Transit Courier with SUS engineswill be offered with a 1.0-litre EcoBoost 125PS petrol or a 1.5-litre EcoBlue 100PS diesel, both standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but the EcoBoost will also have the option of a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
In addition to a much smaller 8.0-inch touchscreen and plain ‘Transit’ badging instead of ‘E Transit’, the internal combustion vans also feature different daytime running lights, as well as a grille with conventional horizontal slats.
Ford says cargo volume is the same whichever powertrain you choose, and all versions can be ordered as either a simple two-seat or two-row van, while the passenger the Tourneo derivative comes later.
