Hypercar Porsche will arrive in 2026 and will be electrified
Porsche has confirmed that it will launch a new hypercar in the future that will be considered as the indirect replacement of the 918 Spyder. It will be electric and will not be presented for at least five years.
Porsche's hypercar project is not immediate. The reason is none other than the brand's objective of developing battery technology as much as possible. The German manufacturer is currently working with the Cellforce Group to develop the next generation of energy accumulators.
Michael Steiner, head of research and development at the company, acknowledged that there are already samples of real cells the size of the current Taycan. The idea is to considerably increase their energy density. Steiner has already warned that only in two years, at least, will it be possible to have an idea of how far this development will go.
“Once we are good enough in terms of volumetric energy density, which is really important for the sportier models, there will be an opportunity to show what can be done on the road with, let me say, a vehicle that approaches the performance of a racing. I have such a car in mind, but we need some further improvements”, declared Steiner.
It will take at least five years for Porsche's new hypercar to be a reality. Its arrival, however, is something that was already clear after some statements made by the company's CEO, Oliver Blume. “The hypercar has always been part of Porsche's strategy. We have always been successful with this type of car. It is possible to create one showcasing future technologies and cutting-edge products. We'll bring a hypercar when the time comes. These models will play an important role in the future of Porsche.”
The path that Porsche is gradually taking in terms of electrification suggests that its next hypercar, rather than a successor to the 918 Spyder, will be an all-new, 100% electric vehicle. It was also Blume who referred a few weeks ago to the importance of developing batteries for the new automobile era. “The battery will be the cylinder of tomorrow, so we still have to research high-power, high-density cells. We will invest in these cells, and when we have the right cell for a high-powered car the time will come, but I don't think about this car before the second half of the decade”.
Ensuring that the new Porsche hypercar will arrive in the second half of the present decade already allows us to state that more years will pass between the arrival of the 918 Spyder and this one, than the years that passed between the 918 Spyder itself and the Carrera GT. The latter debuted in 2003, while the 918 first appeared ten years later.
