SCANIA

The brand's new tractor powered by CNG with 900 km of autonomy is already running in the region

Scania presented at the 2023 edition of Expoagro, in Argentina, a new system to increase the autonomy of its trucks that work with vehicular natural gas (CNG). Thus, according to the brand of the griffin, the autonomy more than doubles, depending on the version. Today, the gas truck covers, on average, 400 km of distance with full cylinders.

This is additional storage space in the back of the truck. Known as "storage backpack". It consists of four ultralight cylinders made of carbon fiber. These cylinders are the same ones used in the brand's CNG buses. And they are usually mounted on the roof of vehicles. Therefore, they are much lighter compared to conventional ones. However, the curb weight of the truck with the "backpack" is around an extra 800 kg.

The system has a storage capacity of 200 m³. And it is installed at the rear of the cabin. Thus, it has the advantage of being able to be placed in new units or used models, which are already on the market. In any case, a 6x2 gas truck can run up to 790 km, while a 4x2 truck reaches 900 km of autonomy.

New gas Scania arrives in the second half...According to Scania Argentina, from the second half, the manufacturer will start offering the installation of the system. As the manufacturer in Brazil informed, "Scania is always looking for improvements. And the increase in autonomy is something latent in the day to day of engineering".

But, although he avoided the question, the Scania gas market in Brazil accounts for more than 600 units sold. In addition, the brand has already announced that the CNG engine with a power of 460 hp will arrive in the country this year. Therefore, it makes sense to offer the option with greater autonomy. Furthermore, the time to fill the truck, even with the extra feature, takes only 15 minutes, thanks to the new high flow NGV1 nozzles.
