Mini features alloy wheel made with recycled pot aluminum

After three years of the launch of the Electric Mini Cooper, BMW presented a convertible version of the electric hatch. With limited production in 999 units, the model has 200 km of autonomy and a power consumption of 17.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP European cycle. But it is not just mechanics that reduces the impact on the environment. According to the brand, the Mini Cooper if convertible is the first car of Mini to use recycled wheels.

The production is made with aluminum, which is 0.16 kg of carbon. That is, it is the same material present, for example, in the pans of the house. Thus, carbon emission is 75% lower than in the production of traditional wheels. Another benefit is that, in addition to preserving sources of raw materials, aluminum use eliminates the electrolysis process. This is necessary to produce alloy wheels, which requires high energy consumption.

Same performance ... According to BMW, aluminum use does not compromise performance. On the contrary, it meets the structural requirements and quality standards of the company. In addition, it optimizes aerodynamics and thus increases range. This is because the new design, with the complete closure of the outside of the wheel, significantly reduces the drag. Finally, BMW states that at the end of the cycle, aluminum wheels can be recycled again.

"As a premium brand, we prioritize sustainability since the beginning of car development. Convertible wheels are an example of sustainable resources. And they represent an important milestone in the company's way for a sustainable economy," said the vice president Senior BMW group autonomous direction development, Nicolai Martin.
