US auto giant is considering using cylindrical batteries instead of the pack options used today

US General Motors is considering switching to using cylindrical batteries in its electric vehicles instead of the pack options used today.

This promises the manufacturer a number of advantages. A similar strategy is already followed by other leading car manufacturers or is preparing to consider this possibility.

The American auto giant is known to use pack batteries manufactured by LG Energy Solution. As reported by The Elec with reference to industry sources, GM's new choice led to the cancellation of the joint construction of a new plant with LG. Meanwhile, the car concern is taking steps ahead of the final transition to cylindrical variants. They are expected to be implemented in future models.

According to available data, GM intends to choose 4680 batteries of the same type used by Tesla. According to the publication, other electric car makers such as BMW, Volvo and Stellantis are also considering their use – 4680 batteries are believed to be more suitable for electric cars compared to other cylindrical versions.

It is known that for battery manufacturers, the process of producing anodes, cathodes and separators and their packaging in cylindrical boxes is extremely simple. At the same time, cylindrical batteries have a lower "energy density" compared to pack or prismatic ones, since there is a lot of free space when packed in large blocks.

The use of long cylindrical batteries of type 4680 with a length of 80 mm makes their use more efficient - less free space remains when packing. At Tesla, this option is even more compact thanks to special refinements.

It seems that General Motors has decided to switch to the use of cylindrical batteries in the context of rising prices in the industry. Cylindrical batteries are the oldest type, so manufacturers have already developed their manufacturing technologies for a long time, and there are many solutions to reduce the cost of production.
