TATA MOTORS
Iconic Tata Nano may return to the fully electrified market
TATA Motors became very famous in 2008 for two reasons: the purchase of Jaguar Land Rover (it still owns both British brands today) and the launch of the Nano, the cheapest car in the world for years.
The four-seater urban model cost 100,000 rupees (about 6,300 reais at the time), but soon began to have problems with some cases of fire. Despite this, the vehicle held up sales until 2018.
The news in this regard is that, apparently, TATA is planning the return of the Nano, this time as an electric car, something that would make sense, as this propulsion system is the most logical way to clean up cities.
Several Indian websites, such as the Economic Times, comment on this possible return of the TATA Nano. The plan would be to retouch the platform and suspension, and even change the tires, in addition to receiving a more modern design, in line with the visual identity currently used by the Indian company.
As it is still a rumor, there are no details about engines and lineup. It is speculated that it could use the manufacturer's Ziptron technology, with a high-density lithium-ion battery.
This component would offer a range of between 250 and 300 kilometers. Without a doubt, it would mean a big difference compared to the original Nano, which equipped a 624 cm3 twin-cylinder engine with just 33 hp.
As for the possible arrival of an electric TATA Nano to production, at the moment one such example has already been created, delivered to Ratan Tata, former president of the Indian company. It is a unit made to measure for the executive, with the intention of obtaining information about the vehicle.
It has a range of just 160 km, but is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. On delivery, Tata explained that the model “offers the practicality of a combustion car and means ecological personal transport for the modern consumer”.
It is also said that TATA is in talks with the Indian Government to buy the former Ford factory and produce this electric car there. Anyway, we'll have to wait and see if all these speculations turn into facts.
