Scania R 660 V8: the truck that costs 2 million in Brazil

With the arrival of the line of trucks to meet the Conama P8 standard, aligned with Euro 6, Scania launches the new generation of 16-liter V8 engines in Brazil. Having as a novelty the version intended for off-road operations and, specifically, mining.

It is the 660 hp Scania with V8 engine and R cabin with XT package. The vehicle will serve the mining segment. And Scania has already sold 15 units on Fenatran to TSL Transportes. The trucks will operate in various mining companies in the country on behalf of Vale.

The truck of millions... It is estimated that this model was the most expensive combustion truck in this edition of the fair. In other words, in addition to the V8 engine, 10x4 traction, wheel hub reducer, retarder brake and all the items in the XT package, the approximate value of R$ 2 million is estimated. Thus, more expensive than the S 770 truck also exhibited at Fenatran and purchased for R$ 1.6 million by Zaqueu Transportes.

It is a truck with PBT for 71 t. In other words, an 11 t load bonus compared to 8x4 trucks, more common in mining whose PBT is 60 t. However, according to Scania Brasil's business development director, Marcelo Gallão, there will be other configurations available in off-road. As in road versions. "Furthermore, we are taking the V8 truck to mining because it proved to be more available thanks to its good performance. In other words, more dynamic in operation", completes Gallão.

In addition, the solutions that Scania offers to trucks that will operate off-road are included in the price. For example, the XT package with features that make the truck more robust, such as steel bumpers with a higher angle of attack, ideal for rough terrain.

On the sides of the vehicle there are steps to facilitate access for inspection of cargo, in addition to an extra door handle on the roof. And finally, I included protective grilles on the headlights and the higher air intake component, so that the engine works with less dust.

Where the Scania V8 is aimed...Gallão says that, historically, the V8 engine has been aimed at highway operations. Or those in which the customer calculates the business. That is, the ton transported per hour. This means that even though the V8 truck carries the load capacity of a truck with a smaller engine, its advantage lies in the higher average speed. "With the V8 truck, the operation can be completed faster, since it overcomes climbs more easily", he explains.

"In addition, with the V8 it is easier to maintain constant speed, regardless of the type of topography. Thus, it is easier to obtain average consumption", explains Gallão.

According to Scania's director, the vehicle with a 16-liter engine is very active in road operations such as grain with road train, in Mato Grosso, for example. As well as in Minas Gerais due to topography. Furthermore, companies that transport indivisible loads also use the brand's V8 truck.

However, there are those who operate a Scania truck even on roads with little topography, because it can work in lower gears. This is the case of transporting sugar cane pulling 91 t of PBTC (total combined gross weight). Thus, it does medium speed and saves diesel.

It is worth mentioning that for the operations mentioned, Scania offers the tractor version. The 6x2 and 6x4 models are the most used. However, now, the brand brings to Brazil the rigid version of the vehicle for off-road operations in an unprecedented way. For now, the brand has the 10x4 model, but Scania can offer any traction. It will depend on the engineering study.

Two 16 liter engines...To meet the demands of Euro 6, Scania brings to Brazil two V8 engines. The 660 hp with 336.7 mkgf and the 770 hp with 377.5 mkgf of maximum torque. This, the world's most powerful series-produced truck. According to Scania, for the Euro 6 standard, these engines are 2% more economical than the Euro 5 generation.

For mining, the V8 660 version combines a GRSO 935 gearbox with a reducer on the RBP 900 wheel hubs. And it has a traction capacity of 210 t.
