Jeep CJ Surge Concept: the legendary classic off-roader has been renewed for the better
Mopar, the sports accessories division of Stellantis, presented an interesting prototype at the SEMA Show 2022 in Las Vegas, under the name Jeep CJ Surge Concept. As we can see, it is a classic off-roader, but the truth is that it hides a surprise.
Instead of equipping a monstrous V8 engine under the hood, this Jeep CJ Surge is actually an electric conversion or retrofit, which adopts a zero-emissions propulsion system. Effectively, we are looking at a classic looking Jeep, but fully electric.
Under the body of this Jeep there is a scalable 400 V electrical module, capable of offering up to 200 kW of power (272 hp), but the most curious thing of all is that it is a module that is coupled to the vehicle's chassis through brackets. specific, being designed so that customers can convert their classics into 100% electric models.
This system is capable of distributing the electric motor power between both axles, through a 2-speed transfer box. Power is supplied by a 24-module, 50 kWh lithium-ion battery with its own housing, which is installed at the rear of the cabin.
The charging socket for the battery is located just behind the driver's door. For now, Mopar has not specified performance and range figures for this electric prototype.
In any case, Mopar comments that the CJ Surge is designed for true off-road use, thanks to Jeep Performance Parts Dana 44 axles, 18-inch Black Rhino Solid wheels, large 35-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires, diameter and a kit that raises the height of the body by 5.0 centimeters.
Aesthetically, the CJ Surge stands out for its Wrangler JK Rubicon bumpers, a Warn front winch, new LED headlights, a body painted in Copper Canyon with gloss black and Surf Blue details, and a cabin with seats and steering wheel. to measure, with the center console of a Wrangler JK and rubber mats, for example. In addition, the bumper is lower, as it has been cut by 5 centimeters.
In principle, there are no plans to take this concept to production, but Mopar already wants to explore the possibility of offering its customers the electrical module for installation in classic models, whether passenger cars or pick-ups, to convert them into zero emission vehicles.
