ROLLS ROYCE

Rolls-Royce testa pela primeira vez um moderno motor de aeronave movido a hidrogênio

English automotive giant unveiled modern eco-friendly hydrogen-powered aircraft engine

Rolls-Royce has partnered with easyJet to carry out the first ground launch of a modern hydrogen-powered aircraft engine. The partners see this as an important milestone on the way to a proof of concept that hydrogen could be the jet fuel of the future.

The model used ecological hydrogen produced by wind and tidal power generators. Among other things, the experiment indirectly confirms the correct choice of decarbonization strategy chosen by Rolls-Royce and easyJet. Both companies are committed to proving that the gas can safely and efficiently power civil aircraft engines - a second phase of testing is already underway and long-term flight tests are also planned.

The test was carried out in the UK using a modified Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A engine designed for use in regional air travel aircraft. The green hydrogen was supplied by the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) and generated using renewable energy in the Orkney Islands, UK.

According to Rolls-Royce Technical Director Grazia Vittadini, the success of this hydrogen test was an exciting milestone. It wasn't until July that we announced our partnership with easyJet and we got off to an incredible start with a landmark achievement. We are pushing the boundaries of exploring the carbon neutral possibilities of hydrogen, which could change the future of flight.

easyJet expressed support for the continued collaboration as hydrogen offers great opportunities for a number of aircraft, including models that fit the size of the small aircraft used by easyJet. The experiment was an important step towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Based on the analysis of the ground test, a series of further bench tests are planned and, as a result, a full scale ground test of the Rolls-Royce engine. Pearl 15 is planned.

The partnership is organized as part of the Race to Zero campaign, which aims to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050. Rolls-Royce is actively involved in the development of "green" technologies. Just this summer, the company announced its intention to test some of its hydrogen-optimized engines, as well as offer hydrogen engines to Airbus, which is already working with CFM International, a joint venture between France's Safran and US-based General Electric. , which is also developing an engine for an experimental aircraft.
