LAMBORGHINI
First 100% electric Lamborghini in the process of gestation
The time has come for a brand as emblematic and above all exclusive as Lamborghini to start its transition to electric mobility. The Italian manufacturer is not oblivious to the changes that the auto industry is experiencing. That's why it started an ambitious roadmap that not only includes the development and commercialization of electrified vehicles. On the horizon, we can already see the first 100% electric Lamborghini.
But before the launch of a Lamborghini with a battery-electric propulsion system materializes, the company will bet on plug-in hybrid technology (PHEV). The successor to the Lamborghini Aventador will be equipped with this type of mechanics. A technology that will also come to the line of the successful Urus, as demonstrated by the blatant photos released in recent months. It will be a first contact with electrification at a high level.
Lamborghini's first production electric car will be ready to storm the market in 2028. The project can be carried out thanks to technology developed by the Volkswagen Group. And its launch will not mean, according to the words made by the top leader of the brand, the disappearance of Lamborghinis with internal combustion engine.
Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, made interesting statements that allow to shed some light on the company's first electric model. Winkelmann openly highlighted that this electric vehicle will not be the successor or replacement of any of the models that are part of the current lineup. It will be a brand new vehicle.
When asked what the first electric Lamborghini will look like, Winkelmann described it as “a fourth model that will be more useful for everyday use. That means a 2 2 two-door car with more ground clearance.”
Winkelmann also spoke of producing the car with the help of the Volkswagen Group and took as a reference the popular Urus: “Volkswagen Group synergies like the ones we already had with the Urus”. This opens the door to the use of the future SSP platform on which Grupo VAG is currently working.
Rouven Mohr, Technical Director of Lamborghini, also made important comments about some of the benefits that the first electric Lamborghini will bring: “Some of our fundamental pillars from a technology point of view fit perfectly with the electric world. If we talk about the integration of carbon fiber elements, the integration of the battery with the chassis, this is something that allows for much more degrees of freedom from a design perspective in terms of aerodynamics.”
Lamborghini will allocate approximately €1.8 billion towards its strategic electrification plan. A roadmap that, in addition to the models noted above, includes the development of a successor to the Lamborghini Huracán. A future vehicle that will also succumb to electrification.
Winkelmann wants to keep the internal combustion engine car alive as long as possible. Regarding the possible use of synthetic fuels, the Lamborghini boss has shown his interest and assures that they can play a relevant role, although it is too early to know: “We don't need to decide now, we still have a little time. After 2025, once the entire line is electrified, we will have to make a decision.”
Regarding Mohr's position, he considers synthetic fuels “very interesting” and confirmed that they are in contact with Porsche: “We are in contact with our colleagues at Porsche because in the Volkswagen Group they are leaders in this. It will continue to be a kind of niche. But for a sports car, racing applications, also for the part of the car fleet that is already on the market, why not?”.
