Hyundai Motor Group to produce vehicles in Slovakia

According to Business Korea, Kia has chosen Slovakia as a springboard for the production of electric vehicles in the EU. The local factory will start mass production of electric vehicles from 2025.

Production of small and medium-sized electric vehicles optimized for the European market is planned at the Kia Autoland Slovakia plant in Zilina, Slovakia. This was officially announced by the Hyundai Motor Group, which is the parent company of Kia. The group has already mass-produced the Hyundai IONIQ 5 in Indonesia and has announced plans to launch electric vehicles in the US. At the same time, there were no plans to expand local production in Europe until recently.

Kia Autoland Slovakia is one of the main factories of the Hyundai Motor Group, which started operations in December 2006, two years before the Hyundai car plant in the Czech Republic. In May last year, the local factory produced 4 million car. Built on an area of 1.92 million m2, the factory has the capacity to produce 330,000 cars annually and today produces the Kia Ceed, the Exceed model based on the former, in addition to the Kia Sportage. Last November, the launch of the Sportage Hybrid and the Sportage plug-in hybrid model started in February of this year.

Electrified versions of cars, from hybrids to pure electric vehicles, are already extremely popular in Europe. Last year alone, Kia sold 116,278 electrified models on the European market and the share of electrified vehicles here exceeded 20% for the first time. In January-September this year, 103,718 cars were sold, up 28% from the same period last year - largely due to the popularity of the EV6 and Sportage. After 2035, Hyundai and Kia plan to sell 100% electrified models in the EU.

For various reasons, Slovakia is considered by automakers to be an extremely attractive platform for vehicle production in Europe. According to the Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency, cars accounted for 50% of Slovakia's total industry last year, and the automobile industry accounted for 13% of the country's GDP.

It is known that electrified models of various types began to be produced in Slovakia by the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche), Land Rover and Stellantis (Peugeot). Preparations for the production of electric vehicles have also started at Hyundai's plant in the neighboring Czech Republic.
