VOLVO

Next SUV EX90 will have two-way charging to power homes and other cars

The electric successor to the Volvo XC90 will be unveiled next month. Until then, Volvo reveals that the EX90 will be able to charge other cars.

We already know that we are facing an energy crisis. The prices of fossil fuels and electricity have soared. Next, it is cheaper to use an electric car, given that more and more people are choosing these vehicles.

The upcoming Volvo EX90, which will be unveiled on November 9, will be the first Volvo car to be hardware-ready for two-way charging capabilities. This feature will initially be available in select markets. Two-way charging has the potential to help us make energy use cheaper, more efficient and more sustainable, says Volvo. Along with smart charging features coming to the Volvo Cars smartphone app, the Volvo EX90 will allow cars to be charged when network demand and prices are low. This means there are more renewables in the energy mix. Thus, you will save the stored energy for later use.

In addition to being able to charge appliances and other devices, the car will have the ability to lend a hand and provide part of the load to other compatible Volvos. On the other hand, if you are about to run out of energy, there is a solution. You can accept the same help from other capable Volvo cars.

Depending on the rules of each market, bi-directional charging may also allow customers to support the network in different ways. This can include consuming more energy during periods when there is a surplus of renewable energy. This can be sold during peak times when there is more demand.

Thus, the car can become a source of energy for the house. It would probably be ideal in case of a power outage. It remains to be seen to what extent this feature proposed by Volvo is viable.
