The great support Mattia Binotto needed
Ferrari chairman John Elkann has supported Formula 1 team principal Mattia Binotto but is urging the Scuderia to improve as "a lot of mistakes" were made during the 2022 season.
Although Ferrari had a very positive start to the season, being extremely competitive, winning races, a series of reliability and strategy issues meant that their chances of winning the drivers' and manufacturers' championships were lost.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Elkann publicly supported Binotto, but acknowledged that the team needs to cut back on its mistakes.
''We have a lot of faith in Mattia Binotto and we appreciate what he and all our engineers have done, but there is no doubt that the work at Maranello, in the garage, in the pits and on the track, needs improvement.
We have to keep making progress and that goes for the engineers, the drivers and obviously the whole management team, including the team boss. We saw that there are still a lot of mistakes in terms of reliability, driving and strategy.
Trusting Binotto and his team was the right decision and it paid off. Thanks to them, we are competitive and we win again. But I'm not satisfied because I think we can always do better... This year he said he proved he can build a competitive car, which was the first piece of the puzzle.
Our first objective was to be competitive. That's why I believe that before 2026 Ferrari will win the constructors and drivers titles again with Charles Leclerc in pole position...We are lucky to have two great drivers who are probably the strongest duo in Formula 1''...Said Elkann
The Ferrari boss still believes Ferrari can achieve its goal of winning both world championships before 2026.
