AUTONEWS

Lyft e Motional lançaram um serviço de táxi robô em Las Vegas, mas até agora com um motorista na cabine para seguro

New robotic taxi service launched in Las Vegas

A new robotic taxi service has been launched in Las Vegas. It is owned by taxi aggregator Lyft and autonomous vehicle company Motional. Next year, the companies will launch a fully unmanned passenger transport service, but for now, the driver guarantees automation.

Motional is a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, which has been testing self-driving cars in Las Vegas for more than four years as part of a partnership with Lyft. Since 2018, its autonomous vehicles have made more than 100,000 passenger trips.

The new service uses all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles modified for commercial operations. Behind the wheel in them is a driver for safety net in case of unforeseen situations. Motional and Lyft have promised that fully autonomous cars will appear on the service next year. Also next year, they will start charging fees - now for passengers, travel in the service's self-driving cars is free.

Passengers will have access to a number of new features. For example, they can open their car doors using the Lyft app. While in the cabin, they can use the Lyft AV app displayed on the touchscreen to command them to move or contact support. These features will come in handy when next year the service operates without a driver in the passenger compartment.
