It has now become known that the Ioniq 5 has received the highest safety rating from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The electric car receives a Top Safety Pick+ rating showing decent scores in each individual category. The Ioniq 5 scores "good" (as high as possible) for all major parameters tested. In addition to the standard frontal crash test with a small overlap on the driver's and passenger's sides, as well as a moderate overlap from the front, these parameters include a roof strength test.
IIH says that after the small overlap frontal crash test, the driver's survivability space remained largely intact, while the front and side curtain airbags deployed normally and were deployed to protect the dummy's head. The risk of injury to the dummy's legs and feet is also very low. The ratings were for the passenger side of the car were pretty much the same.
In terms of collision avoidance systems, the Ioniq 5 avoided a pedestrian at 12 mph and at 25 mph the car's security system reduced the collision speed by 22 mph.
The headlights scored good (the highest possible) on the SEL and Limited trims, while the SE received a fair score (second highest). Recall that in May of this year, Hyundai announced the recall of the Ioniq 5. The automaker has discovered a software error in the gear shift control unit (SCU), which can disable the parking mechanism, which is fraught with the car roll when parking. The recall includes a simple software update, but until then, Hyundai recommends using the electronic parking brake. It is estimated that around 10,729 Ioniq 5s may have been affected by the software glitch. It is important to note that new vehicles already receive updated software from the factory.
