LG Energy Solution to increase its supply of traction batteries for the Ford electrified line
LG Energy Solution is expected to significantly increase its supply of traction batteries to Ford Motor Company as the US automaker ramps up its global production of electric vehicles, including the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit.
According to the Korea Times, citing data from LG Energy Solution, the company aims to double the number of battery production lines in Poland by next year and continue to build new factories.
According to a Ford spokesperson, the automaker has set aside the amount of batteries needed to produce about 600,000 electric vehicles next year. LG Energy Solution, Ford's longtime battery supplier, has already rapidly ramped up production in Poland, where Ford buys power supplies for its products.
The battery maker has been supplying its products for two electric Ford models since the second half of 2020. The Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV, while the recently launched F-150 is an electric pickup. Last year alone, Ford sold about 55,000 Mustang Mach-Es and continues to ramp up production. According to some reports, by 2023, the model's production capacity will more than triple. LG Energy Solution supplies batteries for these models sold in major markets such as North America and Europe.
In addition, Ford aims to invest $50 billion in electric vehicle development by 2025, producing more than 2 million electric vehicles annually. By 2030, the automaker aims to increase electric vehicle sales by more than 50%. It is also known that Ford intends to equip its electric vehicles with American-made LFP batteries, possibly manufactured in the factories of the Chinese CATL.
