AUSTRIAN ROSENBAUER'S ELECTRIC FIRE VEHICLE IS NOW USED BY THE LOS ANGELES FIRE SERVICE (LAFD)
With 3,500 employees, its own television series and a fleet of nearly 1,300 vehicles, the Los Angeles Fire Department is one of the largest fire brigades in the United States - and one of the most famous in the world.
In the previous year alone, LAFD responded to approximately 500,000 emergency calls, including over 4,100 building fires. Now the Americans on the west coast are getting support from Austria. Especially for them, the Rosenbauer company prepared an electric truck marked RTKS.
Two batteries with a total charging capacity of 132 kilowatt hours supply RTKS with energy. The electric drive consists of two motors, each of which drives the shaft. The maximum power is 360 kW (490 hp), while the continuous power of the system is given as 260 kW (354 hp).
However, that is not the end. The truck still has an SUS engine and a six-cylinder diesel engine supplied by BMW. Its role is to prolong autonomy. Both electric motors and internal combustion engines also run the water pump during firefighting.
RTKS was first introduced to the public in 2016 under the name Concept Fire Truck by Rosenbauer.
It is a fire truck with a pump and a tank in the vehicle, an ambulance with hydraulic recovery equipment, a universal vehicle with a lot of special equipment in the rear and an ambulance that can be rearranged in a few simple steps so that people can be transported in the supine position.
The crew compartment thus connects to the driver's cab and forms a barrier-free unit and can be adapted to any application. The company estimates that by 2030, there will be about 3,200 vehicles worldwide with CFT-like technology, and up to 400 such vehicles could be in use in North America by 2025.
With the help of Rosenbauer, the Los Angeles Fire Department is preparing for the future. The RTKS electric truck with extended range is already in use.
