EXCLUSIVE: The Model S and Model X's multimedia center panel received an electrical drive that allows it to be rotated around a vertical axis(click on the video below)
The screen on the central dashboard of modern vehicles increasingly resembles a computer monitor in terms of proportion and size, but not all automakers are ready to additionally take care of the ergonomics of interacting with it. In new instances of the Tesla Model S, the screen in the center console has been given an electrical drive that allows it to be rotated around a vertical axis.
This feature, explains Electrek, was demonstrated in a video by a Tesla Model S customer. His car was assembled in late April, suggesting that the new interface functionality will appear on all Model S and Model X electric vehicles released on that date.
A servo, controlled by a touch menu on the display itself, allows the display to be turned towards the driver or front passenger. In this position, front row residents sitting in their seats will be more comfortable both reading the information and interacting with the touch interface. Recently, Tesla was forced to turn off video playback while driving, even for the front passenger, not to mention the driver. Once the active driver assistance functions relieve the driver of the need to monitor the traffic situation, the ability to view video can be unlocked.
It must be said that the function of adjusting the viewing angle for the central screen is not advanced by industry standards. Tesla's Chinese rivals are already offering screens that can change orientation from portrait to landscape. The flagship Model S and Model X EVs have a strong focus on digital entertainment, with rear seat passengers accessing a separate screen at the end of the front armrest and the onboard computer of these EVs rivaling current gaming consoles in in terms of performance as it also uses AMD's graphics solution. The rotating display in the center console only increases the convenience of interacting with the electric car, without giving unambiguous priority to the driver or front passenger.
