INDYCAR

Danica Patrick

In 2008 Danica Patrick reached the top in Formula Indy

On April 20, 2008, Danica Patrick reached the top of the IndyCar podium. More than a decade has passed and the legacy left by the former pilot is still alive in the memory of the sport. Such a feat was not just a personal achievement, Danica's victory represents a milestone in women's history in the competition.

A US native from Illinois, Danica debuted in IndyCar in 2005 when she was just 23 years old. Until the triumph at the Montegi stage, in Japan, she had achieved a series of fourth places and, a year before the historic achievement, she was on the podium three times.

The pilot's presence in a mostly male environment caused strangeness and aroused curiosity. In addition to first place in IndyCar, Danica was also a pioneer in being the first woman to win pole position in Nascar. About this strangeness caused by her presence, Danica, at the time, made an outburst:

“I was always asked if I was capable of winning a race. From now on, there will be no more of that question.”

Danica Patrick's farewell...The driver retired from the tracks in 2018, at the Indianapolis 500. The bad result in the race, in which she retired on the 68th lap after an accident, didn't make the slightest difference. Leaving the track for the last time, Danica was certain that she left a legacy. In an interview with the Grand Prix website, she said:

“If I'm not opening doors, I like to think I've shown girls, and boys too, that when you love something, and when you get it into your head that you want to achieve something, you can achieve it, no matter what the skeptics say. ”

In her 10-year career, Danica competed in 116 GPs, achieved seven podiums, three poles and two fastest laps.
