GENESIS

Premium Genesis G90 sedan will have reduced speed in automated mode

The SAE classification implies that vehicles with a third level of autonomy are able to do without human intervention for a significant part of the time, and these vehicles are already starting to enter the market. Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor plans to launch the Genesis G90 sedan later in the year, for which the movement speed in automatic mode will be limited to 60 km/h.

As Business Korea explains, national regulations governing the operation of vehicles with active driver assistance systems were adopted by South Korean authorities in 2019, and the UN-controlled agency proposed limiting the movement speed of land vehicles under the control. of automatic systems. at no more than 60 km/h. Before that, in South Korea, the operation of cars with autopilot at speeds of up to 100 km / h was allowed, if we talk about driving through suburban roads. In fact, the limit was set by the existing speed limit for any car. The Korean authorities then explained that the automation itself was able to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front and therefore no further reduction of the speed limit was necessary.

Given the prospects for the Genesis G90 with Level 3 active driver assistance systems to enter the international market, Hyundai Motor has decided to bring its self-driving mode into line with international regulations. For this reason, in automatic mode, the car will move at a speed of not more than 60 km / h. However, as experts expect, even international rules will evolve towards increasing the speed limit, so Hyundai will be able to set a different speed limit due to “over the air” software updates where permitted by law.
