Porsche to return to F1 for Red Bull in 2026
There has been talk for years about the entry of the Volkswagen Group into Formula 1 through some of its premium and sports-focused brands. Now it looks like this will finally be a reality, as according to some leaks, Porsche will return to F1 through Red Bull in 2026.
This had already been heard before, however, the information comes from the Germans Motorsport-total.com, who ensure they have confirmation on the advanced stage of negotiations between Red Bull and Porsche. These would be practically closed, just waiting to receive authorization from the top of the Volkswagen Group.
According to the information, the announcement will become official sometime next March before the start of the 2022 season. However, it must be made clear that Porsche's entry will only be as an engine supplier to Red Bull, and will happen when Honda will completely withdraw from Formula 1 at the end of 2025 and that the new regulations for engines using synthetic fuels, cheaper power units and possible elimination of the MGU-H come into force.
For now, Porsche is present as an official team in Formula E, and soon it will also be in the WEC with the LMDh category. So far, it is not expected that it will seek to make the leap as a full team in F1. Audi, which has apparently tried to buy McLaren, has given indications of seeking a team, although the offer was rejected. In any case, McLaren said it was open to further talks if the Volkswagen Group soon confirms the entry of any of its brands into the competition.
