1990 F-40 vs f-488 Pista

A brief analysis of the technical characteristics of the two models of the Cavallino Rampante house made it clear that the probability of success did not favor the F40, designed to celebrate Ferrari's 40th anniversary, with only 1315 units manufactured between 1987 and 1992. Like the 488 Pista , here in the most recent version, the Spider, the F40 also assembles a V8 biturbo engine, with each turbocharger "blowing" its four-cylinder bench. But the similarities end here.
The 488 Pista's V8 is bigger (3.9 instead of 2.9 liters) and has a more up-to-date supercharging system, which modulates the pressure of the turbo, to have more strength at low and medium speeds, but less at high rotation, essentially to far exceed seven hundred horses. The result is 720 hp for the modern Ferrari and 478 hp for the classic, which, to top it off, had even less strength, announcing 576 Nm against 770 Nm for the 488 Pista.
Associated with the V8 biturbo, mounted in a central rear position, are the gearboxes, which put all the power on the rear wheels. But there are big differences between them. The F40 uses the traditional manual boxes from Maranello (still with only five speeds), with the metallic grid on the selector, which are beautiful but not very fast to handle. Meanwhile, the modern Ferrari assembles the current seven-speed, double-clutch automatic gearboxes, which are extremely fast and controlled from the levers next to the steering wheel.
The F40's last hope was to be substantially lighter than its rival and brother, but not even the weight favors it decisively, since if the F40 claims 1369 kg, the 488 Pista only charges 16 kg more when placed on the scale. That is why even the special talent of Tiff Needel, a well-known journalist and ex-pilot, who became a military man in F1, has not managed to help balance the scales, so much so that it would be unthinkable to brutalize the F40 to get him another half second.
