It doesn't have a snoring that attacks the ears or uses a drop of fuel, but it was designed to “destroy” in quarter mile racing, with more than 1,400 horsepower and more than 152 kgfm of instant torque. For the first time in history, Ford Performance created a factory Mustang Cobra Jet dragster with all-electric propulsion.
Powered by battery, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype was specially designed for drag racing, with time in the range of 8 seconds and speed of more than 270 km / h, showing what an electric power train is capable of delivering in one of more demanding competition environments.
"Ford has always used motorsport to show innovation," says Dave Pericak, global director at Ford Icons. “Electric propulsion gives us a whole new type of performance and the Cobra Jet 1400 is an example of how to push this new technology to the limit. We are excited to show what is possible in this year when we also have the electric Mustang Mach-E joining the Mustang family. ”

After the debut of the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV - the first all-electric Mustang -, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is another opportunity to advance the tradition and performance of the line, incorporating some of the most advanced technologies of future Ford propulsion systems.
The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 also pays homage to the original Cobra Jet, which dominated drag racing in the late 1960s and is still an important force in the sport today.
“This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, a challenge that we like to face,” says Mark Rushbrook, global director of Ford Performance Motorsports. “We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric motors for racing cars, in which we have a lot of experience, so we had performance benchmarks that we wanted to match and surpass. Ford Performance continues to test the Cobra Jet 1400 before its world premiere later this year, in a drag race where fans, the media and competitors will be able to see what it is capable of on the asphalt.
To optimize the project, Ford Performance joined several specialized suppliers, such as MLe Racecars (vehicle design, construction, integration and calibration), Watson Engineering (support and development of chassis and guard cages), AEM EV (software, controls and engine calibration) and Cascadia (supplier of inverters and motors).
