The company launches long-distance battery for electric cars
General Motors launched on Wednesday a new generation of batteries for their electric cars, in another move to compete with Tesla, the industry leader.
According to GM, its Ultium batteries will have a range of 400 miles (645 km) per charge, and have been developed for rapid recharging and use in various types of vehicles.
"Our team accepted the challenge of transforming the development of the products at GM and positioning our company in a fully electric future," said the group's executive president, Mary Barra.
GM reported that it is increasing its portfolio of electric vehicles with several new models this year, including a new version of Bolt EV, which will be released in late 2020.
The GM strategy is based on a "modular propulsion system" and the flexibility of the new batteries, which can be installed vertically or horizontally depending on the vehicle type.
"Thousands of GM scientists, engineers and designers are working to run a historic overhaul of the company," said GM President Mark Reuss.
GM plans to launch electric cars under its Cadillac and GMC Hummer brands, and also produces Cruise autonomous electric vehicles in California.
