LAND ROVER

Brand discloses prices of the Defender model in Europe

It is now known that Land Rover will start marketing Defender, with the first units to arrive in Spring, relating to the five-door Defender 110 version, with the Defender 90 (three doors) appearing in our country only at the end of the year. Summer. At the end of the year, it will be the occasion to welcome plug-in hybrid versions, which promise to be the most accessible among us, as well as commercial Defenders, available in versions 90 and 110.
The new Defender has nothing to do with the old. Goodbye to the chassis / cab with side members, by far the most robust solution to withstand “bumps”, in its place a monoblock solution similar to Discovery Sport, much more versatile, sophisticated and comfortable. Rigid axle suspensions have also disappeared, having been replaced by independent systems, which the brand guarantees are equally effective on off-road, but much better on the road, which is not hard to believe. Finally, the equipment is no longer just doors and tires, with the new Defender taking advantage of all the perks of the remaining Land Rover - and even some Range Rover -, from electronics to driving aids, in addition to infotainment systems …
After the good news, the less good…

If we add to what we have already said, an attractive, more modern aesthetic, but with evident traces of the lines that have been defending Defender since 1983, we end with the list of good news. This is because, despite being available with gasoline and diesel engines, with plug-in hybrids scheduled for the end of 2020, there is a detail that will keep a considerable part of potential interested parties away: the high price.
Land Rover stopped manufacturing Defender in 2016 and faced a dilemma. In view of the number of units sold, it was not worth investing in a new beam frame to produce a new working jeep, but, on the other hand, the decision to move forward with a monoblock chassis similar to Discovery, aimed at making the model more civilized and able to attract more customers, would drive up costs. However, this was exactly the decision of the British, who then had to invest a fortune to ensure that, despite the absence of side members and rigid axle suspensions, the new Defender would be even better off-road.
Available with the short or long body, the Defender 90 or Defender 110 respectively, the English SUV assembles supercharged petrol or diesel engines. The most affordable version will be the Defender 90 with three doors (4.32 meters long) and 2.0P Si4 engine with 200 hp, equipped with automatic gearbox and integral 4WD system, on sale for € 81,812, for the same model with diesel engine , the Defender 90 2.0D SD4 with 200 hp (4WD and Auto), will be proposed for € 88,180.

The Defender 110, with five doors (4.76 m long) and the same gasoline mechanics, is being marketed for € 89,187, for the 200 hp diesel version requires an investment of € 95,554. Prices are high, especially when compared to the previous generation. But the increase is mainly due to our taxation, since here in Spain, Defender 90 is offered for prices starting at € 54,980 and Defender 110 from € 61,480. In other words, due to the tax system, the Portuguese pay about 27 thousand euros more for both short and long Defender. See all versions and engines for sale in Portugal here.
To further mess up the model's potential, the new Defender becomes far more expensive than the Jeep Wrangler, proposed from 58 thousand euros. The cleavage is even more striking when compared to Discovery Sport, the vehicle that Land Rover sells the most and which in Portugal is available for 55 thousand euros for individuals, or 42 thousand euros for companies that can recover VAT.
Land Rover is studying a commercial version, with only three seats ahead, designed specifically not to be so penalized by the Portuguese tax authorities.
