Jorge Lorenzo and farewell
Lorenzo had a 2019 where everything went wrong. The transfer to Honda did not bring the expected results, as the new falls began to compromise Spanish health. The result was a collective on Thursday (14) announcing the retirement of MotoGP, a consequence of a long reflection that began after the fall and injuries in Assen in the Netherlands.
The melancholy and early exit – Lorenzo is still 32 years old – was somewhat unpredictable until 2016. The Spaniard was still driving for Yamaha and fighting for titles year after year. The passage through Ducati, followed by Honda, never brought results of the same level - only that is not enough to regret the changes.
"Being so perfectionist requires a lot of motivation and so, after the nine best years of my career with Yamaha, I felt I needed a change to stay committed like this. I decided to go to Ducati and it gave me a great boost, even if the results didn't arrive right away. I did not surrender until I got that wonderful victory at Mugello in front of all the Tifosi,” he concluded.
” From the beginning I saw that I was not able to be in normal physical conditions to be quick and competitive, " said Lorenzo, visibly moved. "The bike never became a natural thing and it was difficult, but I never lost patience. When I began to see some light, I had that ugly fall in Montmeló and, two weeks later, in Assen again with all the consequences that we already know. When I was in brita, I got up and thought, ‘Jorge, you really deserve this after all you've achieved,’” he said.
The crash at Assen took Lorenzo out of four stages of MotoGP. In the seven subsequent stages, the Spaniard scored only three, with 14º as the best result.Jorge Lorenzo is preparing to say goodbye to the MotoGP. According to the Spanish press, the world's fifth world champion has called a press conference this Thursday afternoon, where it will announce its withdrawal.
Confirming this scenario, the Valencia Grand Prix, which is being held this weekend, will be the final race of the 32-year-old Spanish driver.
During his 17-year career, Jorge Lorenzo won five championships in two different motorcycle categories (250cc and MotoGP), Aprilia (2006 and 2007) and Yamaha (2010, 2012 and 2015).Lorenzo also ran for the Derbi, Ducati and Honda, being one of the most winning riders (68) and podiums (152) in the history of motorcycling.
