Icon Officially Unveiled As Boxy Subcompact SUV With Global Ambitions
Geely has finally released the first official photos of its new subcompact SUV, the Icon.
As patent photos revealed earlier this year, the Geely Icon is heavily inspired by the namesake concept vehicle from 2018. Unveiled to the Chinese media at a design seminar in Nanjing, the B-segment SUV “showcases an evolved version of Geely’s ‘Expanding Cosmos’ design DNA” while at the same time exploring the limits of the brand’s design language.
It’s certainly an interesting design, with the Geely Icon retaining the distinctive blocky silhouette from the concept.
The front end featuring split headlights and an expanding cosmos grille carries over almost unchanged, while the profile gains pop-out door handles and rearview mirrors with integrated turn signals. At the rear, the infinity loop motif continues to be featured in the signature of the LED taillights.
Inside, the Geely Icon’s dashboard is dominated by two big screens: the instrument panel and the central infotainment display. The dual interactive screens allow users to interact with the vehicle and connect to the rest of the world via the GKUI Geely Smart Ecosystem. Overall, the dash reminds somewhat of the Citroën C4 Cactus.
The Icon is Geely’s second SUV based on the modular BMA architecture following the more conventionally-styled Bin Yue. The platform is also used by the Bin Rui sedan. The Chinese automaker did not release details about the powertrains, but the Icon is said to feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
The dimensions have not been confirmed either, but most reports claim the Icon is 4,350-mm (171.5-in) long, 1,810-mm (71.2-in) wide and 1,615-mm (63.6-in) high, with a wheelbase of 2,640 mm (103.9 in). If they are accurate, it means the Icon is slightly larger than the Bin Yue platform cousin.
Geely says the Icon has been designed from the outset as a global model aiming to open “a new era of smart mobility for a new generation of users, a generation that demands high-tech, inspiring vehicles.”
