The Mercedes-AMG A35 Is Faster At Hockenheim Than The Old CLS 63
In the hands of Sport Auto’s Uwe Sener, the Mercedes-AMG A35 lapped the Hockenheim GP in 2 minutes and 05.70 seconds.
The all-wheel drive hot hatch, which is the most affordable model developed in Affalterbach, managed to beat the old CLS 63, as well as the BMW i8 Roadster, new M135i xDrive and Volkswagen Golf R Variant which, according to FastestLaps, ran the course in 2:05.75, 2:05.80, 2:06.00 and 2:06.60, respectively.
Despite using an AMG-tuned all-wheel drive system and packing a 306 PS (302 HP / 225 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque 2.0-liter turbocharged four, the AMG A35 could not beat the front-wheel drive Renault Megane RS Trophy. The 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque French car ran across the finish line in 2:00.80, one tenth of a second behind the new 421 PS (415 HP / 310 kW) AMG A45 S 4Matic+.
The unofficial king at the Hockenheim GP is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. The clock for the Italian supercar stopped at 1:47.30, 0.7 seconds quicker than the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro and almost one second faster than the McLaren 720S.
At the other end of the chart, we find the VW Up! GTI, which posted a time of 2:23.70, preceded by the Porsche 997 Turbo’s 2:19.94 and Abarth 500 Esseesse’s 2:19.40. The old Audi R8 ran the course in 2:17.55, nearly 1 second slower than the Suzuki Swift Sport. Keep in mind, though, that these are all unofficial lap times, unrecognized by any automaker.
