Dieselgate: German press says automotive giant will Pay €1billion

The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is expected to fine Daimler, Mercedes' parent - Smart is also part of the group, but 50% was sold to Geely Chinese - for finding that German group has set up systems to handle emissions from diesel engines installed in the C-Class and E-Class. Der Spiegel advances the information.
In immediate terms, Mercedes should be exposed to a penalty of € 5,000 per vehicle produced with this fraudulent system associated with Dieselgate, which could amount to anywhere between € 800 billion and € 1 billion. At the same time, it has to recall 280,000 problem vehicles.
Also according to the German publication, the German prosecutor informed that the process is ongoing and will not be concluded before the end of the year. On the other hand, Daimler did not deny, but declined to comment until the process was over.
The German authorities also claim that several Daimler employees are under investigation and suspected of fraud following a raid on Daimler in May 2017, which should be terminated in September or October this year.
Mercedes recently collected from the workshops the GLK 220 SUVs manufactured between 2012 and 2015, and the manufacturer is also being investigated in the US, with the local Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) having asked the manufacturer in 2016 about emissions of some models with diesel engines. As regards Dieselgate, in May Porsche was fined EUR 535 million, Audi EUR 800 million and VW EUR 1 billion.
Der Spiegel also points out that Daimler reported in July its second-quarter 2019 results, with net losses of € 1.6 billion, including provisions necessary to accommodate any Dieselgate penalties.
