AUTONEWS

More stringent emission standards for pollutants are on the way
The rules adopted by the European Union require that the consumption of gasoline and diesel engines and their emissions, whether harmful or only carbon dioxide (CO2), be evaluated and analyzed under an increasingly powerful magnifying glass. This wrecks the possibility that some manufacturers might dare to use a "creative" approach to pollutants resulting from combustion.
Volkswagen, whose history in this area is known, has published a video explaining the evolution to which the current WLTP (World Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure) method has been submitted in recent times and is preparing to apply in the coming years. Easy to see and realize, the film starts in September 2018, when the Euro 6d-TEMP standard came into effect, remembering that also the RED (Real Driving Emissions) system came into effect, albeit experimentally, by evaluating the quantity particles and hydrocarbons (HC) that go into the atmosphere.
But the biggest changes will come in September 2019 when the Euro 6d-TEMP EVAP ISC is implemented. "EVAP" means that evaporative emissions from the fuel in the tank will be calculated, a criterion that is substantially more important in gasoline than diesel, when the vehicle is exposed to an outside temperature of 35 ° C, which in Portugal is during the summer. The ISC acronym for InService Conformity anticipates the measurement of used vehicles to be driven. The video also mentions the FCM, or Fuel Consumption Monitor, which records the fuel consumption over the entire life of the vehicle, allowing to determine the total emissions in actual driving directions. Take a peek and you'll realize there's a lot to learn about it.
