Tesla's global supplier of minerals, Sarah Maryssael, told a press conference behind closed doors in Washington with mining companies, regulators and lawmakers that Tesla foresees a shortage of key minerals for electric cars, in the near future .
The copper industry is frozen due to long years of underinvestment, and is now trying to recover to develop new mines and extract enough raw material for the current heyday and the future trend of electrification worldwide.
Freeport-McMoRan, one of the world's largest copper producers, is already expanding to the United States and Indonesia.
The problem is that electric cars use twice as much copper as cars with internal combustion engines. Smart home systems such as google's Nest thermostat and Amazon's personal assistant Alexa will consume approximately 1.5 million tons of copper by the year 2030.
Currently the consumption of copper is about 38,000 tonnes, according to the latest data from BSRIA.
